Two scrub tops have the same stated size, but their shoulder seams follow different routes. On a raglan sleeve, the seam runs towards the neckline. A set-in sleeve joins the body around an armhole, with the shoulder seam meeting that area.
Seamwork’s construction discussion identifies raglan and set-in sleeves as different options with different assembly demands. For someone choosing workwear, the seam route is a useful feature to recognise, but it does not determine comfort by itself.
Follow the seam before judging the label
Lay the top flat and trace where the sleeve joins the body. This is easier than relying on a product photograph where folds or a pattern hide the construction. Look at the inside as well, noting seam bulk and finishing where they may contact your skin.
Then compare the whole garment: fabric stretch, sleeve width, body width and overall length. A roomy raglan design and a close-fitting raglan design can feel very different. The construction name is not a substitute for trying the actual cut.
Use ordinary movements during the fit check
Reach forward, raise your arms within a comfortable range and sit down. Notice whether the neckline pulls, the hem rises excessively or the sleeve restricts movement. Use clean, safe movements rather than simulating clinical tasks with patients or equipment.
If you wear a permitted base layer, try the combination you expect to use. A top that feels comfortable over a thin shirt may behave differently over a thicker layer. Follow workplace uniform and infection-control requirements when choosing clothing.
For online shopping, compare the garment measurements with a top you already find comfortable. Ask the seller about unclear dimensions instead of assuming all brands use the same size label.
A short note helps when reordering: the model, size, fabric and the movement that felt restricted or comfortable. “Raglan” alone will not preserve that information. Recognising the seam gives you a better vocabulary for the comparison; the complete fit still has to earn your approval.
