Choose Work Gloves for the Task, Not Only the Material Name

“Nitrile” identifies a material family, not a universal permission to handle every chemical or sharp object. Two gloves made from the same broad material can differ in thickness, construction and tested performance. The task must lead the selection.

OSHA’s dermal-exposure guidance lists factors including chemical identity, concentration, contact duration, temperature, dexterity and physical hazards. Its PPE selection guidance also points to manufacturer performance documentation.

Describe the exposure before choosing the box

Write down what the worker will touch, how often, for how long and under what conditions. A brief splash risk differs from immersion. A cleaning task can combine chemical exposure with abrasion, while a clinical task may have separate infection-control requirements.

Use the workplace risk assessment, safety data and the glove manufacturer’s compatibility information. Where the task is unfamiliar or the information conflicts, ask the responsible safety professional. Choosing by colour, comfort or a colleague’s habit does not establish protection.

Fit and use are part of the decision

A glove must allow the necessary grip and movement while providing the specified protection. Consider cuff coverage, correct sizing, change intervals and safe removal. A suitable glove used beyond its approved conditions may no longer perform as intended.

For purchasing, record the exact product and approved task rather than a generic note saying “buy gloves”. This helps prevent a substitution that looks similar but lacks the required performance.

Gloves also do not replace controls that reduce exposure at its source. Review the overall work method, training and hygiene arrangements. The useful question is not which material is best in general, but which documented product is appropriate for this particular task and how it must be used.
